What We Leave Behind

I have always been intrigued by abandoned man-made spaces. I speculate as to the reasons why they were left to decay. History may record the broad strokes but not all is captured. Some mysteries continue to shroud the details of their fading existence.

Perhaps my upbringing has something to do with it; while I was growing up, we often moved. I have had to re-adjust and familiarize myself with new surroundings over and over again. It is that which perhaps made me more keenly sensitive to the spaces around me. The unfamiliar became familiar to me.

Inevitably, we all leave the spaces we create – no one lives forever. However, at times we manage to leave behind a fingerprint of immortality through the very structures we create. We leave something behind that will, hopefully, outlast us and allow future generations to know that we existed.

For this exhibit I have chosen images of spaces that have not or may not survive another generation. They have been left behind either to patiently await their renaissance or to slowly have nature reclaim them.

I try to find beauty in places where one no longer expects to find it. There are layers upon layers of meaning buried within each image; some are more obvious than others. I leave it up to the viewer to decipher and to consider…

What we leave behind.
